Parkinson’s disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological disease that develops gradually and affects the body’s ability to control movements. The disease is caused by nerve cells in the brain that produce the neurotransmitter dopamine slowly dying. This can lead to symptoms such as tremor, stiffness, slow movements and muscle rigidity.

At CPH Privathospital, we offer rapid assessment by a consultant in neurology. An early evaluation can help provide clarity and ensure that the right treatment can be initiated as early as possible.

Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease
The symptoms often develop slowly and vary from person to person. The first signs may be subtle and develop over several years.

Typical symptoms are:

  • Tremor at rest that disappears with movement
  • Slow movements
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Reduced balance
  • Shuffling gait
  • Reduced facial expression
  • Weak or monotonous voice
  • Smaller handwriting

Some also experience symptoms such as fatigue, sleep problems, constipation or reduced sense of smell, long before the classic movement symptoms appear.

Assessment for Parkinson’s disease
The diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease is made by a consultant in neurology based on a thorough discussion of your symptoms and a neurological examination.

If the diagnosis is made, you must be referred for a so-called DAT scan. The examination is performed exclusively in the public sector and can help support the diagnosis.

It is not necessary to await the result of the DAT scan before treatment can be started. If the neurological assessment indicates Parkinson’s disease, we can therefore start the medical treatment while you await the scan.

Treatment of Parkinson’s disease
Parkinson’s disease cannot be cured, but it can be treated. The goal is to reduce symptoms and preserve functional level and quality of life for as long as possible.

The medical treatment aims to compensate for the lack of dopamine in the brain and can provide significant improvement of symptoms in many patients.

The treatment is tailored to the individual and monitored continuously, so that it continues to match the disease progression and your needs.

Exercise and physical activity also play an important role. Many benefit from physiotherapy, balance training and other targeted exercise as a supplement to the medical treatment.

When should you see a doctor?
If you experience persistent tremor, slow movements, stiffness or other symptoms that may be signs of Parkinson’s disease, you should be assessed by a neurologist.

Early investigation can provide clarity and make it possible to start treatment at the right time.
